Beethoven, “Sonata degli addii”, op.81

Fermate tutti gli orologi, tagliate i fili del telefono,
impedite che il cane abbai, dategli un osso succoso.
Silenziate i pianoforti e con tamburi in sordina
portate fuori la bara, avanzino le persone in lutto.

Vòlino sopra muggendo aereoplani in circolo
scrivendo nel cielo il messaggio EGLI È MORTO.
Mettete collari di crespo nero al bianco collo dei colombi di piazza,
I vigili del traffico indossino guanti di cotone neri.

Lui era il mio Nord, il mio Sud, il mio Est e Ovest,
il mio giorno feriale e il mio riposo della domenica,
il mio mezzogiorno, la mia mezzanotte, il mio parlare, il mio canto.
Pensavo che l’amore durasse per sempre : mi sbagliavo.

Non occorrono stelle ora. Toglietele tutte.
Impaccate la luna e smantellate il sole;
versate tutto l’oceano e spazzate via il bosco.
Niente ora potrà più venire a nessun bene.

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
